ABED AWAD is a partner and founding member of the law firm of Awad & Khoury, LLP. He is a graduate of St. Peter’s College, the University of London, and Pace University Law School where he served as a managing editor for Pace International Law Review. In addition to his Juris Doctorate, Mr. Awad holds a Master of Arts in Near and Middle East Studies and a Certificate in Comparative Law from the University of London. He was admitted to the bars of New Jersey and New York and the related federal districts, including the Third Circuit, in 1999. From 1998 through 1999 he served as the Law Clerk for the Honorable George E. Sabbath, J.S.C., Superior Court of New Jersey, Passaic County.
Mr. Awad has extensive experience in the areas of complex matrimonial, Islamic and international law, and commercial transactions. Martindale-Hubbell has awarded Mr. Awad its AV Peer Review Rating, its highest level of professional excellence. Mr. Awad is also a member of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers where he is a frequent speaker. Mr. Awad is a contributor and the U.S. Editor of ShariaSource, which is a new initiative of Harvard Law School’s Islamic Legal Studies Program.
In 2002, Mr. Awad was selected as one of ten “Lawyers of the Year” by Lawyers Weekly (USA) for his groundbreaking decision enforcing the Mahr provision contained in a Muslim marriage contract. In 2007, the ADC awarded Mr. Awad with the Community Activism Award. Mr. Awad is also an international expert in Islamic law and the laws of Muslim countries.
As a frequent public speaker at bar associations, universities, conventions, and political events, Mr. Awad lectures on subjects ranging from law, politics, gender, religion, and culture internationally. Mr. Awad has made over 200 television and radio appearances, including appearing on ABC, CNNfn, Al-Jazeera, Al-Qataria, Al-Arabia, CBC, BBC World Service, and CNN, among others. From January to November 2004, he was the weekly democratic commentator on U.S. politics for Al-Jazeera. Mr. Awad has been quoted in numerous American newspapers such as The New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Star Ledger, Village Voice, and Chicago Lawyer among others.
